Hannah Schwarz has been one of the leading singers in her fach since she made her debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 1976 in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen (directed by Patrice Chéreau). She is a regular guest at leading opera houses around the world including the state operas in Hamburg, where she was a member of the ensemble, and Munich, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Zurich Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London and the Bayreuth and Salzburg festivals. She enjoyed great success singing Carmen, Octavian (Der Rosenkavalier), the Amme (Die Frau ohne Schatten), Klytämnestra (Elektra), Herodias (Salome), Auntie (Peter Grimes), Geschwitz (Lulu) and more contemporary music by Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, Hans Werner Henze and Alfred Schnittke. Recent engagements have included the old Buryja (Jenůfa) in Munich and the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Filipjewna (Eugen Onegin) at the Opéra National in Paris and, in 2018, she sings Wesener's old mother in Die Soldaten at the Teatro Real in Madrid. She has also performed in many of the world's leading concert halls with orchestras including the Concertgebouw Orchester, the Vienna and Berlin philharmonics, the London Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra and Boston Symphony Orchestra.
