Clive Bayley

Bass

Clive Bayley, with a repertoire encompassing Monteverdi, Verdi, Puccini, Berg, Britten and Birtwistle, enjoys a busy career appearing at leading opera houses around the world. This British bass made his debut at Oper Frankfurt in 2007/08 singing John Claggart in Richard Jones' Billy Budd, returning in later seasons for Dosifej in Khovanshchina, the General in Harry Kupfer's Der Spieler/The Gambler and Swallow in this new production of Peter Grimes. In 2018 he sings the title role in Boris Godunow for the first time, at Göteborgs Operan. Recent engagements have included Publio (La clemenza di Tito) in Glyndebourne and at the Proms, Dansker (Billy Budd) at the Teatro Real in Madrid, Fafner (Das Rheingold) in Manchester, the Commendatore (Don Giovanni) in Belfast and Leporello (Don Giovanni) at English National Opera in London. He has also appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, as the Doctor in Wozzeck. Other theatres where Clive Bayley has performed have included the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Welsh National Opera in Cardiff, Opera North in Leeds and Grange Park Opera. He also enjoyed great success at the Aldeburgh Festival, in Hamburg, Amsterdam, Toulouse, Lausanne, Seattle and San Francisco.
